Backpack the Hudson’s Bay Heritage Trail | 08/9-16/18
A 7-day backpacking trip on a 160-year-old fur brigade trail.
As BC historian Harley Hatfield once said, “History should be learned through the soles of our feet.” On this backpacking adventure, you’ll truly be walking in the footsteps of history, experiencing the Hudson’s Bay Company “Brigade” Trail just as the fur traders did.
Guides will share stories of people and events that reveal the vibrant life of this historic route.
Since 2009, the Hope Mountain Centre has worked with many people and groups to restore the trail. We’re excited to show you this fully restored trail and its beautiful backcountry campsites!
- Overnight in subalpine meadows at Conglomerate Flats Camp.
- See wildflower meadows in peak bloom.
- Hike to the summit of Mount Davis.
- See beautiful alpine lakes, including historic “Palmer’s Pond” and “Grant’s Pond.”
- Cross over the “Cascade Divide” where the Fraser and Columbia watersheds meet.
Completed in 1849, the HBC Trail was built to link the Fraser River at Fort Hope with Fort Kamloops and other important forts farther north to Stuart Lake. For more than a decade, the HBC’s fur empire in Western North America depended on this trail. Brigades of up to 400 horses and men annually pounded over the Cascades in summer and fall, bringing furs west to the coast and carrying food and equipment inland to re-supply the forts. The HBC Trail played a key role in the early history of British Columbia, and before that, was a hunting trail and east-west trade route for First Nations such as the Stó:lo, Nlaka’pamux and Upper Similkameen.
All participants must be in good health and have average physical fitness. Previous backpacking experience is recommended, but not mandatory.
This trip is considered “assisted backpacking.” All clients will only need to carry their day bags (with layers, lunch, snacks, water, & some emergency gear) throughout the hike. Overnight bags will be shuttled by vehicle and guides to camp.
$1,200 + GST
At time of booking we will ask for a 50% deposit to hold your spot.

August 9- DAY 1- Peers Creek to Colville Camp
- 8:00-Meet at Blue Moose Cafe in Hope (322 Wallace Street)
-Grab a coffee & pastry. Meet & greet & pre-trip briefing
- 9:00-Drop vehicles off at Hope Recreation Centre (1005 6th Ave)
-Load all gear in gear shuttle vehicle & passengers in van
- 10:00-Arrive at Peers Creek Trailhead
- 4:00-Arrive at Colville Camp (km 11)
August 10- DAY 2-Colville to Sowaqua Camp
August 11-DAY 3-Sowaqua Camp to Jacobson Lake
August 12-DAY 4-Jacobson Lake to Horseguard Camp
August 13-DAY 5-Horseguard to Lodestone Camp
August 14-DAY 6-Lodestone Camp to Olivine Camp
August 15-DAY 7-Olivine Camp to Tulameen River
- Shuttle van will be there to pick everyone up
- Stop in Princeton at Thomasina’s cafe for lunch & ice cream!
- Drive back to Hope arrive in Hope around 6:00pm if all goes according to plan
**Please note all these times are estimates & things may go faster or slower on the trail.**
* Sturdy hiking boots- Should provide ankle support and be sealed against moisture. Wear plenty of times before the trail to avoid bad blisters.
*Wool Hiking Socks- A thin synthetic (non cotton) inner sock and a thick outer sock. Bring 1 or 2 pairs of back-up socks.
* Water crossing shoes/sandals-can also be used as camp shoes
* Baselayer botton & top-Merino wool best (no cotton)
*Mid-layer bottom & top- Fleece pants & sweater
