Description
**Please note the Expedition no longer comes with a spray skirt or thigh-straps when ordering the Removable Whitewater deck or fixed deck. You can find those the Ultralight Spray Skirt here, Heavy Duty one here or the new Immersion Labs one here. Thigh-straps here .**
The Expedition is a one boat quiver killer. Its adaptable performance allows for seamless transitions between backcountry traverses, traditional multi-day river trips, weekend getaways, and whitewater laps with friends. No other packraft offers a greater range of potential adventures.
The Expedition features a mid-volume hull with a center panel stern and moderately rockered bow, which optimizes tracking, speed, and performance across the broadest range of river conditions from flatwater to lightwater to whitewater. A backband and lace-in seat perfectly balance comfort, performance, and packability. Keep the build as light as possible, or add the optional patented 3-point thigh straps and whitewater foot brace for better performance in lightwater and whitewater.
The Expedition is only available in a Whitewater Deck or Removable Deck configuration. We recommend the Gnarwhal for similar uses and performance in a Self Bailer.
What's New in 2025?!
The Expedition receives only minor changes for 2025.
- The hull remains the same design and dimensions, but we've added an extra-large size standard from the Custom Lab.
- We've switched from the previous included 4-point thigh straps to a new lighter optional 3-point thigh strap system. They are lightweight, incredibly comfortable, easy to fit, and provide plenty of support for up to Class III/IV whitewater.
- The seat is the same design, but attaches via lacing to the side tubes rather than a toggle attachment to the floor. You can still attach a lap bag to the front of the seat.
The main difference between the 2024 and 2025 models is versatility and intended uses. The 2024 model was our flagship versatile and performance wilderness packraft. Instead, we offered the Classic for the more budget oriented and casual adventure packrafter. The Classic has been discontinued for 2025 because we felt that the Expedition offered better performance for people buying decked Classics and the Caribou could offer better performance for people buying open Classics.
The 2025 Expedition is offered without thigh straps for similar pricing as the 2024 Classic, or with thigh straps for similar performance and lower pricing than the 2024 Expedition. We think that's a win for everyone.
Recommended Uses
- The most versatile packraft in our lineup, the Expedition is fully adaptable to a multi-week wilderness traverse, desert float trip, or lapping the local whitewater run. The ultimate Alaska ready packraft for flatwater, lightwater, and whitewater.
- Our highest performance lightwater packraft, the Expedition particularly excels on shallow splashy rivers that require super quick turns and tight eddy catches. Less experienced and warm water paddlers should consider the self-bailing Gnarwhal. Optional thigh straps recommended.
- With the optional thigh straps, the Expedition is great packraft for up to Class III+ whitewater. Expert paddlers may be able to paddle harder sections up to Class IV, but we recommend a more performance model like the Mage or Valkyrie if that is your focus. Beginner and intermediate whitewater paddlers should consider the Gnarwhal for a more forgiving and learning focused whitewater packraft.
How does it Compare?
Expedition vs Caribou
The Expedition is a much better whitewater and lightwater performance packraft than the Caribou, which makes it the choice for packrafters looking for a versatile packraft with a whitewater focus. The Caribou is lighter and more compact, especially in the Open build and is a better option for more of a flatwater to lightwater focus. The Caribou’s late rise bow is a better choice for ackward or bulky items like bikerafting.
Expedition vs Gnarwhal
The Expedition and Gnarwhal very similar designs, but with different intended uses. For the versatile packrafter, we recommend the Expedition for colder climates or if you prefer a deck and spray skirt. The Gnarwhal is recommended for warmer climates or if you prefer a self bailer. The Gnarwhal is also preferred for a beginner/intermediate whitewater focused packraft.
Expedition vs Mage
The Expedition is more versatile than the Mage for flatwater, lightwater, and backpacking uses, but is still a good whitewater model for experienced paddlers. The Mage is whitewater focused and will outperform the Expedition in all whitewater applications, especially larger and more powerful Class III and harder runs.

Weight Capacity
With multiple sizes, the Expedition will fit most paddlers up to 230lbs. Larger paddlers should consider the Gnarwhal. Cargo weight recommendations are 20-40lbs for maximum whitewater performance, up to 60lbs for general purpose, and up to 100lbs for extended trips on larger rivers.
Sizing
The chart below shows our recommended size based on your sit length and the Expedition fit profile. To determine your sit length, sit against a wall with your legs flat (wearing your preferred paddling shoes) and measure the distance from the wall to your heels. The Expedition is sized for a performance fit, meaning that a typical paddler in the recommended size can press their feet against the bow when straightening their legs which provides better control than a relaxed fit and more all-day comfort than the whitewater fit. You can size up or down for a more performance or relaxed fit. We recommend sizing down or getting a whitewater foot brace if you are going to add thigh straps.

There are many other methods of rolling and folding the boats that will result in a different packed size that may be more or less efficient for packing depending on the situation.

Build Configurations
Whitewater Deck without Thigh-Straps
The most popular option, the standard Whitewater Deck is our driest and warmest configuration for the Expedition. It is ideal for all water types in cool climates and the highest performance option for whitewater. The Whitewater Deck features a large kayak style cockpit, one-piece pex coaming, and an ultralight secure fitting spray skirt with shoulder straps.

Removable Whitewater Deck without Thigh-Straps

The Removable WW Deck features the same cockpit as the standard Whitewater Deck, but with a perimeter zipper for converting to an open boat for more relaxing days. The Removable WW Deck maximizes versatility for the broadest range of paddling conditions.  The standard WW deck is a drier option, and a better choice for cold water and extended whitewater.

Cargo Fly Zipper
Our innovative Cargo Fly internal storage system comes standard on the Expedition. The Cargo Fly features an airtight zipper installed in the stern of the boat to allow you to store your gear inside the tubes. The system provides drier and more secure gear storage and improved paddling performance due to a lower center of gravity.
Internal Dry Bags may be purchased separately and are designed to work with the Cargo Fly system. The bags clip in place along each side of the tubes with a side release buckle and allow for better organization and weight balance than placing the contents of your pack loose inside the Cargo Fly. They also act as additional balanced air chambers to make it easier to get to shore in the event of a puncture.
